Japanese Game Pickups

Went to a nearby Antique Mall today that also had a lot of collectibles, and found a few interesting Japanese games:

This would be Hokuto no Ken for the original Game Boy, Armored Core 2 for the PS2 and Zone of the Enders for the PS2. I got decent prices on all of them, so I decided to go ahead and pick them up.

I’m an avid Hokuto no Ken game collector, so I certainly couldn’t resist that one. It’s actually a Street Fighter-style versus fighting game (though without any of the depth that Street Fighter has to offer), unlike many of the other games in the franchise.

If you can believe it, I’ve actually never played an Armored Core or Z.O.E game. No time like the present!

Ranger Lemon Squash and Monhan Caramel Corn

Here is the final installment of things that I really shouldn’t have spent so much money on at my local Japanese grocery store! To go along with the previously posted Kamen Rider cans, these are the slightly less (but still) cool 5 Ranger Lemon Squash cans. Of course in true 5 Ranger (or Power Ranger if you prefer) tradition, they came in all of the typical Ranger colors of the rainbow, as well as a mix between all of them. Since I’m not nearly as big of a Ranger fan as I am of Kamen Rider, I opted to only pick up the Pink and Red cans.

Similar to the Kamen Rider cans, they also contain factoids and even a bit of trivia on the back.

Perhaps more important, but ultimately more disappointing than this is…

Monster Hunter caramel corn! Being a huge fan of both Monster Hunter and caramel corn, I thought that this was a win/win situation! So immediately after these photos were taken, I decided to open up the package and give it a try. My first reaction was that this was not in fact caramel corn (popcorn covered in caramel), but rather corn snacks that were vaguely flavored like caramel.

Oh well, they could still be good! So I decided to give them a try.

Needless to say at this point, they had not met my expectations. However they were not the worst Japanese snack that I had ever eaten by far. So the verdict: so-so.

A warning to all: be very careful when purchasing Japanese snack food!

Kamen Cider!

A trip to my local Japanese grocery store today resulted in me spending far too much money on these wonderful cans of Kamen Rider goodness! They are called Kamen Cider (a word play on “Kamen Rider”…”Rider”…”Cider”…get it?), and it’s a carbonated beverage that tastes very much like Ramune. Though only just over half of them are pictured here, there were several different cans available: The original Kamen Rider (pictured on the left), Kamen Rider V3 (1st from the left), Kamen Rider Black (2nd from the left), Original Kamen Rider Sakurajima Ver., Kamen Rider ZX (1st from the right), Bee Woman, Hell Ambassador, Shocker (on the right) and a special Gold can.

As you can see I selected my favorites and didn’t bother with all of them. I feel like I got the best ones though! Though I’ve hardly seen all of the various Kamen Rider shows out there, I’m still a very big fan of the franchise despite the fact that I’m not a 10 year old Japanese boy (though perhaps I am at heart).

All cans feature a couple of photos from their respective Kamen Rider series on the back, as well as little blurbs and factoids. And perhaps best of all, it features the phrase “tatakae Cider!” (“Cider, fight!”) on the back as well.
